New routes for easyJet

easyJet are set to lauinch several new routes from Luton airport including a direct flight to Montpellier airport.

These new routes are due to start in July 2009.

Perpignan airport set for refurbishment

Perpignan Airport will this year receive 980,000 € for urgent modernisation, which will include a new aeronautic zone to enable new businesses, resurfacing of the existing runway, and improvement to the airport fencing.

This figure represents a 70% contribution to the total sum of 1.4m € budgeted by the Airport Syndicate, which also comprises the Perpignan-Mediteranee Local authority. So Perpignan Airport is the second biggest recipient of grant aid after Montpellier, which has been granted 2,088,998 € to develop new routes, and boost those existing ones.

Perpignan, if this is ratified, should continue to see passenger growth; some 458,000 passengers used it in 2008, a 35,000 increase over 2007.

Put another way, Perpignan airport received 18% more passengers in quarter 3 of 2008 than in the same period a year earlier. These figures, supplied by the local Chamber of Commerce, showed an important increase (39%) in International Passengers. Of the total of 172,709 passengers in this period, 91,484 were International. This follows several years of decline, coinciding with the rapid development of Girona Airport, which has become a sort of alternative for North Catalonia, thanks to its wide variety of destinations. It finished 2008 with a total of 5.5 million passengers, some 13.6% more than in 2007.

Girona’s success ,and the improvements at Perpignan,are partially thanks to economic and political initiatives, including those of “Sud”, unveiled in Barcelona in January this year, for the approval of the Governments to involve private companies in the running of the airports, following the system used all over Europe. In the short term, however Roussillon hopes are pinned on a new route, Perpignan to Bristol, due to open this July.
